Far from it, the written part of the exam tested for the core knowledge that one needs to be a commander - fire science and behavior, building design and collapse, tactical protocols for certain types of fires and emergencies, the proper knowledge and use of highly technical equipment and so on. It was not "memorizing" a "booklet" but showing that you possess essential knowledge to do the job, knowledge contained in a series of nationally standardized textbooks of the profession. If you do no possess this knowledge, you can't even articulate how you would handle a situation in the oral assessment phase of the job. For example, if you are not familiar with a certain type of roof construction and how it behaves in a fire (because you don't know the content of the BOOKS), you can't answer a question in the oral phase as what tactic you would employ in commanding that fire scene. The above poster is woefully ignorant of the profession and I guarantee would not want someone who flunks that written test to be the one leading the charge to save his butt in an emergency.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8573812880094279639.post-706997254971601532009-09-16T12:02:43.979-04:002009-09-16T12:02:43.979-04:00If you think the written test for a driver's l...If you think the written test for a driver's license selects out the best drivers, then you'll love the test that selected Ricci. Sixty per cent of the score was based on answering 100 multiple choice questions after memorizing a test booklet. This test was responsible for all of the racially disparate results. I'd rather have officers selected according to the non-written part, in which officers had to say how they would respond to hypothetical situations on the spot, and that's what the black officers wanted.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
