Daniel Lewin, 9/11 Hero

Although his name is rarely mentioned by the media, Daniel Lewin, a brave "first responder," may have been the first casualty of the 9/11 attacks according to the Israel Matzav blog.

Lewin, then 31, a former Israeli commando who was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11, tried to stop Mohammed Atta from taking over the plane but it is believed that another terrorist sitting behind him slashed Lewin's throat with a box cutter. Originally from Colorado, Lewin held dual American-Israeli citizenship.

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he founded the hugely successful Akamai Technologies software firm. Read more about this hero and Renaissance man at WBUR.org and the company's website.
